Welcome to Shondaland, The Catch.
I ride and die for Shondaland, but outside of Grey’s Anatomy, I have never been quick to sign on when Shonda starts a new series. I binge watched Scandal 4 seasons late (#Mellie4Prez), and haven’t even tried to get into HTGAWM (unnecessary acronym, world). This time around I bravely decided to break the norm and start The Catch in its pilot season. All I have to say is: YAS SHONDA YAS.
The Catch S1 Review
The pilot season of The Catch was much better than I expected. I was on the fence (also am on the fence about your weird Romeo and Juliet show, Shonda) because for being such a TV junkie, I had never heard of any of these series regulars.
Spark Notes Version: Alice and Christopher (more on him later) are engaged to be married. Christopher works for a ring of con artists targeting Alice’s private investigation firm, Anderson & Vaughn. Long story short, Christopher scams A&V out of a casual few mil, disappears without a trace, and Alice (also referred to as Allie) sets out to find him and figure out why TF this happened. Sometimes Allie works with the FBI, sometimes she searches behind their back, but at the end of the day she and Christopher still love each other despite the whole con artist thing. Christopher (real name-Ben) wants out of the con artist firm (aka the Kensington Firm, barf) so the entire season sees Allie and Ben simultaneously avoiding the feds to save Ben, but also teaming up the feds to take down the Kensington Firm.
-Alice & Val & their squad give me such Olivia Pope & Associates vibes. While there is a bigger plot line at play with the whole “my fiancé scammed me and my business out of a million dollars but I still love him” plot, Anderson & Vaughn still keeps up to speed with their PI cases each episode. Sophie and Danny are adorable and I am kind of upset it took an entire season for them to actually get together. Excited to see where that one goes.
-If I had one criticism, it would honestly be WTF is going on with the Kensington Firm. While we’re at it, I hate every British person on this show. (Looking at you, Margot.) Why are they all so scared of their damn mother? Why does Rhys not spell his name Reese? Why do people so casually get murdered on your shows, Shonda? These are the hard questions.
-The background of the firm was pretty hard to follow and I still can’t quite figure out
- How Ben got involved
- What his deal with Margot is
- Why they are all so much more British than him
These are also the hard questions.
-Christopher/Ben/whatever you want to call him (we will stick with Ben, for now): Minus the whole “scamming Alice out of millions,” I am in way too deep with their love story and believe he is a good guy. I knew that damn stolen painting would be relevant at some point and when Ben took the fall for the theft (F you, Margot), he solidified his place in my heart. #BaliceForever (They deserve a ship name.)
-Agent Dao: How the hell did you land Val? I just don’t understand. Anyways, I am indifferent about Dao. He does some weird things and cares too much about Ben & The Firm, but I was excited to see him and Ben team up against them and (sort of) take them down.
-Side note, Val is a bad bitch.
I have to say, I am highly disappointed in the lack of Shondaland crossovers. Literally half of the series regulars on Scandal are crossovers from Grey’s. I was
hoping expecting to see at least five Grey’s doctors/former patients/family members in The Catch, so I can only hope that Shonda is saving this for S2.
Overall, I think The Catch has solid TGIT potential to become a big gun like its Grey’s Anatomy/Scandal counterparts. See you in Season 2!
