I’ve been attending Coachella since 2010. I can still vividly remember my first year in all its glory including the car camping, no showering and insane energy of the Polo Fields. I became instantly hooked. My Coachella experiences have changed a lot since that first year and when I say a lot I mean a lot. I’ve done VIP, paid for expensive housing and partied with Bieber. It has been a whirlwind.
This year, my friends and I decided to do Nochella in the desert. What is Nochella you ask? Well there are two revolving definitions of Nochella. The first is simply someone who is not attending Coachella, hence Nochella. The second is someone who is not attending the actual music festival, but is attending all of the Coachella parties in or around Indio. This year, we decided that it would be fun to head to the desert and see what parties we could get into!
With every passing year, the parties surrounding Coachella are taking on a reputation of their own. So much so that it is easy to stay fully entertained for a weekend in Indio without actually attending the festival. You can still get the energy of Coachella without dropping thousands of dollars on a long weekend. Here are my tips to best maximize your Nochella experience.
GO WEEKEND 1
The best parties are held during Weekend 1. There is no doubt about it. Just trust me. Go Weekend 1.
FIND FREE HOUSING (IF YOU CAN)
I know, I know, free housing during Coachella Nochella weekend sounds ridiculous but it is possible. My biggest piece of advice is simply, ask. Do you know someone that knows someone whose grandma’s aunt has a house? Can you stay on their couch? Get creative, brainstorm and look at your contacts. Housing costs during the weekend can be crazy expensive so ask early and you will be surprised at how much you can save.
Be proactive about your RSVP because there are a ton of free parties. This past year alone had Pandora, Under Armour, Amuse and a handful of others. They were all held for free and all you had to do was RSVP online and arrive early. Stay active on blogs that report on Coachella parties throughout the entire month leading up to the festival and submit RSVPs on behalf of your whole group so you know you’ll all be included together.
SUBMIT YOURSELF FOR EXCLUSIVE PARTIES
There are a ton of influencer parties which are “invite only” throughout the weekend. Typically the brand hosts will release online fliers with e-mails to submit RSVPs for and I say – submit yourself. You never know who might let you in! There is no harm in submitting yourself +1 for a party and who knows, you may just end up hanging out with a few celebrities.
MAKE THE PARTY
When in doubt, bring a fun group, find a pool, throw on some good music, add alcohol and boom you have your own desert party. There is no shame in just staying in and partying with your friends!
So while I LOVE Coachella, Nochella is an option! This year, we got into quite a few amazing parties, met a bunch of great bands and made some great new friends!
