Since moving to Australia, taking care of my skin has been one of my top priorities. When I first moved to Perth I was in shock of the never-ending heat and consistent sunshine. This city alone has over 3,000 hours of sunshine every year. The second thing that shocked me was how poorly people age here because of the sun and its unforgiving rays. I noticed that anyone over the age of 60 has terrible skin pigment, dark lines or spots, and deep wrinkles. Did you know that two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70-years-old? It is the most common cancer in Australians aged 15-44-years-old with the leading reason for diagnosis being the sun.
Naturally, all of this has made me overly cautious if not paranoid about my skin. My skin care routine varies depending on how busy I am during the week but I am pretty consistent with all of the below products.
Product #1: Kiehls Daily Reviving Concentrate and Midnight Recovery Serum. I love almost all of the Kiehls products I’ve tried, but these first few are my particular favorites. I have tried my share of oils (Rose Hip, Tea Tree and Argan) but they always leave my skin feeling heavy and super oily. I’ve been using the Midnight Recovery Serum for over a year now and I really believe it has made a difference in the overall appearance of my skin. My skin drinks up all the essential oils and I feel immediately refreshed especially if I have exercised that day.
The Daily Reviving Concentrate is really lightweight (a great base for makeup) and smells ah-mazing. I automatically feel like my skin is awake and off to a healthy start when I apply this in the morning. If you want to try any Kiehls products I strongly suggest that this be the one!
Product #2: Kiehls Avocado Eye treatment. This is another product that is a part of my night routine and I picked it because everyone loves a good avocado. I’m terrified of getting crow’s feet when I’m in my thirties so for the past two years I’ve been religiously applying eye treatments (I’m hoping my obsessive behavior in my twenties pays off). I always apply it along the cheek bone and just around the outer corner of my eye where I would normally apply a highlighter for makeup.
Product #3: Clarisonic Aria. I’ve been using a Clarisonic for about four years now and the speed levels on this particular model makes it the best one I’ve used. It even came with great day/night exfoliates that are really gentle and light. I try to use this 2-3 times a week at maximum. Thanks mom for sending!
Product #4: Biore Charcoal Deep Cleaning Pore Strips. Everyone hates those dreaded black heads on their nose. Sometimes I used to think that when people looked at me that was all they could see. I remember as a teenager always trying those different nose strips and it never really making a difference. However, I recently found one that actually does work and it’s extremely satisfying! If anything you will want to use this just so you can rip it off and get the complete satisfaction of watching all that disgusting dirt be slowly pulled out from your pores.
Product #5: Tie between Bio Oil and Lucas Papaw Ointment. Bio Oil is an amazing product built from plant extracts and vitamins and is primarily used to prevent scaring. With my olive skin tone I tend to scar VERY easily. I can still see a scar on my arm from an April 2012 hair straightener incident in Paris. Whenever I feel a potential scar coming on, I apply this product immediately and generously. I also use it if I have a cuts or rashes. Recently, my friend even applied Bio Oil every day during her pregnancy and did not get any stretch marks on her belly. You read that right, she had ZERO stretch marks during her nine months.
The second product is Lucas Papaw Ointment which is an Australian product made from pure Australian papaw, a common fruit found in Queensland. I use this product for insect bites, cuts, and on my lips. It’s a perfect reddish hue which makes it a great lipstick especially if I plan to drink red wine! This product is versatile and natural so I will always keep one handy at my work desk and at home.
Product #6: Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Clear Face Sunscreen. The last but definitely not least important product I use is this easy and lightweight sunscreen for my face. Although there are plenty of Australian sunscreens, I will be forever loyal to this line from Neutrogena. I apply this every morning during the summertime before putting on makeup and I love that it is SPF 55 and will last all day on my skin.
Thanks for reading my current favorite skincare products and would love to know your thoughts and the products you swear by!
