Hi all, Kaitlin and Sarah here with another fashion event. This time we bring you our first ever Met Gala recap! This year’s theme was honoring the designer of Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo and the show’s official title was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. We saw everything from the extravagant to the extremely underwhelming and below we’ve first listed out the looks that actually followed the theme followed by our top five looks (with a few honorable mentions).
MET GALA IN THEME
KJS TOP 5
Choosing a top five was difficult for me. While I don’t think a lot of the celebs followed the Comme des Garçons theme, I still fell in love with a lot of the looks. Honestly, maybe the fact that so few people followed the theme is the reason why I fell in love with so many looks, because Comme des Garçons is not always my jam. Anyway, here are my top five picks for Best Dressed at the Met Gala this year.
Alright Lily Aldridge. What a great place to start. I was not expecting such a bold look from this classy model, but I am so pleased with it. The fuchsia veil with the simple makeup (pretty sure she’s not wearing mascara… Yeah, I saw it on some Insta-story today) looks so fresh. Love.
Gigi Hadid looks so freaking glamorous I can hardly handle it. The nude tones are so simple, but the structure of this dress is heavenly. Just the right amount of softness and edge. Pair that with those thigh-high fishnets and the classic Angelina Jolie power pose and you’ve got yourself a red carpet winner.
Zendaya’s entire look is what dreams are made of. The colors, the patterns on the fabric, her makeup, her hair oh gosh her hair. Sheer perfection. So exotic and FIERCE. GET IT GIRL.
I know Mandy Moore’s look seems simple, but I think it’s fairly on-point with the theme (having a style that is exactly where feminine meets masculine and maybe a little wild). The structure of this stress is different in a good way. Also, I love her hair, makeup and jewelry. The bright purple eyes were a definite theme among the women at the gala and I was obsessed.
Cara Delevingne is a bombshell. While I think this look could have gone really well in last year’s Met theme of Manus x Machina, I can see where she’s going with the Comme des Garçons inspiration. The metallic head-to-toe look is very boyish and modern, which is basically Comme des Garçons in a nutshell. I wonder how long it took her to get her hair to look like that? Also, her expression in this picture is just perfect. The cocked eyebrow just really tops off the whole look for me.
KJS HONORABLE MENTIONS
Selena Gomez is my current hero. She can do basically no wrong in my eyes (although I’m not sure I get why she and The Weeknd are together? But they looked cute AF on the red carpet tonight). Her dress is so soft and simple and I love it. Pair the feminine dress with those purple eyes (told you they were popular) and you’ve got an bold look. I wonder if I could get away with trying this purple eyeshadow situation?
Lily James was another pleasantly bold surprise for me. Usually she’s dressed in extremely romantic looks, and while this soft white gown looks feminine at first glance, it has just the right amount of edge for her. The massive black and insanely structured bow on the back screams Comme des Garçons. Then there’s her makeup. That dark bold eye is unusual for her, and I think it’s the perfect choice for this red carpet.
Rose Byrne’s hair is enough to make my jaw drop. I’m obsessed. This cut out cherry red dress is absolutely stunning. The whole look is Old Hollywood glam meets New Hollywood sex and I am okay with it.
SAS TOP 5
Like Kaitlin, I had a very hard time choosing a top five outside of the “in theme” looks. Rihanna hands down takes the cake as Queen of the Met Gala this year and she is by far my #1 look. Outside of Queen Rih though I had a hard time narrowing it down and ended up with four extra honorable mentions in addition to my five Best Dressed. For the Met Gala I tend to lean toward the more extreme outfits purely because this is the one event of the year that you are SUPPOSED to lean not only outside the box, but outside the universe. The crazier the better, lay it on me.
Janelle Monae’s stylist has been absolutely killing it as of late. This Met Gala gown is STUNNING and nearly made it into the “in theme” lineup. The structure of the bottom half of the gown is very Comme des Garcons inspired and the neckpiece ties it all together for me.
The internet has had a field day calling Priyanka the modern couture version of Inspector Gadget and honestly….they aren’t wrong and I’m not mad about it. Wear a giant trench coat train with black booties, a top knot and LIVE YA LIFE.
Ashley Graham is so smoking hot and this dress fits her like a damn glove. She is serving up chic salsa girl emoji realness and I am here for it because MET GALA.
If you would have told me that one of the night’s boldest looks was coming from Lily I would have lolled in your face. What originally caught my eye about this look was the hair and makeup. It is perfectly simple and let’s her veil take center stage while still giving you sharp af brows. Besides the hair/makeup look, this dress is incredible and THOSE BOOTS Y’ALL. THOSE BOOTS ARE LIFE.
I saved the best for last because even though this look is not on theme in the least it is STUNNING. Zendaya’s hair, the gown, the bold lip, all of it is chic as hell and I cannot stop staring at her. That train was built to float atop the Met’s stairs and Z looks so effortlessly gorgeous.
SAS HONORABLE MENTIONS
This dress is more meant for award season than the Met Gala but I had to throw it in here because it is so beautiful.
Y’all know how much I love structure in my gowns and those shoulders is why Dakota made it into my honorable mentions.
The pink is what drew me in, the cape is what kept me.
I want to know how much fabric is sitting underneath the bottom half of this dress. Also 10,000 points to Lena because she wore a Planned Parenthood pin as her accessory. Do it for the ladies.
