Today we are talking all about PERIODS and TAMPONS and PADS and LINERS and MENSTRUATION. Being a website dominated by women writers, all of the above are things we deal with on a monthly basis so we wanted to dedicate an entire post to reviewing a new organic tampon/pad/liner company. In this post we will not be sugarcoating by using words like time of the month or flower. There will be no depictions of women frolicking through meadows in white dresses, no photos of tampons being covered in blue liquid rather than red and no acting like getting your period is a walk in the damn park because NEWSFLASH, 98% of the time it isn’t. Periods are a thing that happen to more than half of our population and we as a society need to be more comfortable talking about them. Periods are not taboo and they are not shameful, if anything they just make women that much more badass because we can lose so much blood every month and still manage to stay alive. We are basically super human.
Three of our writers (myself included) have recently signed up for LOLA, an organic cotton period brand that delivers tampons (applicator and non-applicator), pads and liners straight to your door. After a few months of casual research, I started freaking out when I found a few articles that alerted me to the fact that some major tampon companies use a mixture of cotton and rayon in their tampons. In case you didn’t know, cotton is a natural material while rayon is an artificial fiber made from cellulose. With the fear of TSS that has been instilled in every woman since their first period, I would rather know exactly what was in my tampons rather than take my chances.
LOLA is made with 100% organic cotton. That’s right, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. No gimmicks, no lies, no dyes, just straight organic cotton. They also recently added organic pads and liners to their lineup for the days when you don’t feel like using tampons. Below we are each going to give our honest review of the LOLA products. Spoiler alert: we LOVE them.
10/10 would recommend.
Let’s just ignore health/environment/social consciousness for a moment. You order your LOLA online and can customize your box(es). Then they just show up on your doorstep! No, “oh fuck I forgot to pick up tampons. Guess I’ll just bleed on everything I ever loved.” Plus you can change the customization and/or frequency of your boxes at pretty much any time. Bless modern technology.
If you need more than convenience to convince you that LOLA is the way, I’ve got that for you too. First of all, they use organic, non bleached, sustainably sourced cotton. I know that’s a lot of buzz words, but when it comes to things I put inside my body, they are all v appreciated. A lot of women, myself included until I started doing some research, don’t realize the amount of chemicals major brands use to create their tampons. Sadly, just because it’s pink, doesn’t mean we can trust it.
To be honest, I didn’t think I’d notice a difference between “organic” and “non-organic” tampons. SPOILER ALERT: I totes could! Since we’re already talking about Big Red, while I don’t have a wide set vagina, I do have a pretty heavy flow, meaning for seven days a month I’m just lowkey hemorrhaging with some v uncomfortable cotton shoved up my hooha. We’re talking itchy discomfort, with the only relief coming in the form of a free bleeding shower. UNTIL LOLA. Legit, they absorbed just as well as regular tampons, but irritated my lady bits WAY less. Bless up!
So like I said, 10 out of 10 would recommend. You get two boxes for the price of one on your first order, so give it a shot!
I went into my LOLA subscription extremely skeptical of the actual quality of the tampons. Like Serita, I typically have a normal to heavy flow (s/o to Day 2 aka The Flood) and was not totally convinced their Super tampons were going to be as trustworthy as my Tampax Pearl. I was very happily proven wrong. Not only did they absorb the same, but my LOLA tampons were insanely more comfortable to have in throughout the day.
Besides the quality, the ordering and delivery experience was fab. Too many times in my life I’ve had to run to a Ralphs or CVS on my lunch break because I discovered I was bleeding profusely as my uterus was mad I was not housing a fetus. LOLA removes all of last minute tampon buying from the equation. Not only can you can order anywhere from 1-3 boxes to arrive to you either once a month or once every two months, but you can also customize your box(es) of 18 tampons to be a mixture between light, regular, super and super+ which is the BEST.
Last but not least, the packaging is adorable. Compact applicators, great blue color scheme and the best catch phrase pun on the lid of the box you could ever ask for. 10/10 would recommend LOLA to all lady friends with angry uterus’.
Not only is LOLA 100% organic, BPA-free plastic, and hypoallergenic, it’s also small and can easily fit in the palm of your hand or in small purse. It’s safer for your body than most tampons with the added convenience of being discreet. I’m not one to go out of my way to hide my tampons, but I don’t necessarily like waving them around as I walk around my office to the bathroom.
On top of that, the packaging is adorable and very minimalistic. I appreciate the soft white and blue design as opposed to the frou frou bright yellow and pink designs other companies *think* women want.
I’m definitely willing to spend the extra few bucks for safety and to support a company I respect.
Told ya we all loved LOLA. As a parting thought, you can get 2 boxes for the price of 1 or 3 boxes for the price of 2 (discount automatically applied) on your very first order. Not only that, but you can also use any one of our three referral codes (Serita: SROBINSON7, Sarah: SSOLIS2, Angela: APEATE1) to get an additional $5 off. Is that amazing or what?
LOLA was birthed by two extremely brilliant ladies to help other brilliant ladies have a better period (learn more about the founders Jordana and Alexandra here). Here’s to a (slightly) less painful menstruation with products that you can trust.
