On behalf of the entire TGS team, I would like to say we are all sending love and light to the people of Orlando after the tragic events that have happened this weekend. I spent the greater part of yesterday trying to wrap my mind around how one single human can have so much hate in their heart. How one person can choose to play the role of Fate and end so many beautiful lives. A lot of people in this country think that most of our threats are abroad but this just became the biggest mass shooting our country has ever seen. This was a domestic hate crime. Yes I am aware there is some speculation that this man was also involved in other acts of terrorism but I do not want to downplay that this was also a hate crime. This man purposely walked into a well known LGBT space and opened fire. It was premeditated and he was well armed. This was a hate crime.
To the LGBTQIA+ community, my heart breaks to know that a place you created as a sanctuary was taken from you. A place where you could be completely unabashedly yourselves was torn from your grasp in mere minutes. Please know we are all with you. Light will always conquer darkness, love will always drown hate and change will come.
I would also like to say that I completely understand the request to honor the great document that shapes our country – The Constitution. At the same time, we need to be acutely aware that that same great piece of paper also stated that slavery was legal and that women had no rights. SPOILER ALERT we have modernized and updated our laws since those papers were signed in 1787 and it is far past time that the right to bear arms is also discussed and changed. The last time I checked, the reason these things keep happening isn’t because of a 1787 musket, it’s because of a semi automatic weapon.
Donate to Pulse nightclub here. Donate blood here (they are currently at capacity but urge people in Orlando to return in the upcoming days). Call your local Congress people, write letters, speak out, use your voice, demand change.
Love is love is love is love is love.
