April is National Poetry Month in the United States so today I wanted to share a few of my favorite poetry books that I find myself going back to time and time again. Started in 1996, National Poetry Month was organized by the Academy of American Poets to bring awareness to the genre. I’ve been a fan of poetry for as long as I’ve been a fan of words. There is a different kind of magic found in poetry that isn’t found in novels, short stories or songs. Poets have to be much pickier with their word and structure choice and in that sense, I think the genre itself is a different kind of struggle.
Poetry is what I find myself reaching for not only when I’m feeling sad or upset and in need guidance, but also when I’m at my highest and happiest and want something that meets me on that level. There are poems about every single type of emotion and situation if you go looking for them and below are a few of my personal favorite poetry books.
If you want something uplifting read Poems of Inspiration and Courage. If you want something that takes you on a journey from heartbreak to rebirth read The Princess Saves Herself in this One, Girl-King or Milk and Honey. If you want something nostalgic read Memories. If you want something a little heavier read The Dream Songs. If you want something about love read Love Poems. Finally, if you want something that is more of a catch all, read what is one of my favorite books of all time, She Walks in Beauty.
Happy National Poetry Month!
