Dear Mom and Dad,
Thank you. These two words are thrown around with such ease nowadays that the phrase often falls flat. Sure, I say thank you all the time but I’m not clear as to what degree it lands. You two go above and beyond what is required and I need you to know that it has not gone unnoticed.
Thank you for being my best friends. I know this sounds cliche but I’ve built my life around being a walking cliche so why stop now. You are genuinely the two closest people to me. No matter what, I can call you at any time, regardless of the situation or circumstances. Oh boy, have I really taken advantage of that! It doesn’t phase you when I call at 2am while lost at the Rose Bowl or when I’m locked out of my apartment or even if I’m just bored on the weekend and want to chat about nothing. (Side note: I should really memorize more phone numbers so that I’m not still calling you in the middle of the night when I’m 30.) In fact, you both encourage me to call whenever. You enjoy being there for me at all hours, at my best and worst, at my most ridiculous and boring, at my hilarious and annoying. I’ve put you through the ringer, so thank you for hanging in there with me.
Thank you for teaching me. I would be nothing without you two as a support system. I honestly believe the reason I am so strong in all aspects of my life is because of the two of you. You’ve taught me how to hold my head high and to be unabashedly me. Thank you for teaching me the importance of reality TV, fast food, exercise, seeing every movie in theaters, being informed, the list goes on and on. You’ve not only taught, but you’ve questioned me. You both want what’s best for me and have never been afraid to push and prod to get it out. Thank you for not being passive. Teenage Sam would never believe what I’m about to say, but thank you for being stern and strict. You have instilled such a strong sense of discipline and work ethic in me that I wouldn’t have developed otherwise. Through all of this teaching and questioning I’ve learned to have the confidence to be myself.
Thank you for accepting me for who I am. You both are true representations of unconditional love.
Thank you for laughing with me and, more importantly, at me. I know I can count on you both to crack a joke or get a legitimate laugh at how stupid life and people can be.
Thank you for supporting me. You’ve been there for me at every major crossroad in life. Even in times of doubt you’ve put on a strong face and supported me through thick and thin. You’ve encouraged me to pursue my passions as nerve-racking as they are.
Thank you for keeping me up to date on all reality TV, movies, gossip, and important celebrity news.
Thank you for everything that I can’t put into words. It’s the small, everyday things that matter the most.
I would be nothing without the both of you. You are the reason I am alive and thriving today. I owe you everything and could not be more thankful.
You’re the best. I love you both.
